5 takeaways from the Seahawks’ preseason win over the Browns

The Seahawks defeated the Cleveland Browns 37-33 on Saturday night at Lumen Field to cap off the first preseason under Mike Macdonald's leadership.

After a 2-1 preseason loss, Seattle will focus on Tuesday's roster-cutting deadline of 53 players and Tuesday's regular-season start against Denver.

Regarding the impending roster layoffs, Macdonald stated, "We got a couple big days ahead of us."

A number of spectacular plays on Saturday helped the Seahawks win, including a 21-yard touchdown throw from Geno Smith to DK Metcalf to end the first series, which was the only one in which the starting offense was used. Other big plays included a 56-yard touchdown run by second-year running back Kenny McIntosh and a 79-yard punt return by Dee Eskridge.

The Two early injuries to Seattle defensive players—cornerback Artie Burns and outside linebacker Uchenna Nwosu—tainted the game.

On the game's fourth play, Nwosu, who was supposed to be the captain of the team's pass-rush unit, was chop-blocked and seemed to have a left knee injury.

Burns, who seems to have earned a job as a nickelback and outside cornerback backup, was carried off on the second series following a noncontact injury to his left foot. The extent of any injury was not immediately known.

What else was noteworthy is this:

Smith impressive in a single series with the starting offense

The starting offense started the game and received its first preseason plays, as Macdonald had stated.

Smith overthrew an open Metcalf on the first snap, showing that he had recovered from his injury in just one play.

On the following four plays, though, he was as accurate as ever: a 29-yard ball to Jaxon Smith-Njigba; a dump off to McIntosh while dodging two rushers for a nine-yard gain; a slant to Smith-Njigba for seven yards; and finally, the game-winning 21-yard touchdown pass to Metcalf on a fade route. Justin Hardee Sr., the Cleveland cornerback, went down, and Metcalf reached up to grab the ball.

With that, the score was 7-0, and Smith and the other offensive players who were guaranteed starting positions were done for the preseason. Smith completed with a passing rating of and a touchdown (4 of 5 for 62 yards).157.9, almost missing the maximum score of 158.3.

In an in-game interview for the KING 5 broadcast, Smith told former Seahawk Cliff Avril, "It was good to be back home, give the fans a little bit of what we've been working on, and also more of what's to come." "We proceeded down the field, and I successfully hit DK Metcalf for a touchdown, thrilling the crowd." That was fantastic.

Enough so that Macdonald chose to forego the pregame strategy and rest the offensive for the remainder of the evening.

"I think we saw enough, but the plan was to do a couple series," he stated.

Moreover, defensive starters continue to pitch shutouts.
Like the offense, Seattle's starting defensive players saw one series and performed as well as Macdonald could have imagined.

The Seahawks seemed to force a three-and-out against a Browns offense that was using backup quarterback Jameis Winston and only three named starters total after Cleveland started at its 28 after the opening kickoff. However, Boye Mafe's tipped pass on the third-down play resulted in a roughing penalty on Nwosu, which prolonged the drive.

The following play, Nwosu was wounded when Wyatt Teller of the Browns was called for a chop block.
